A taste of Italy kicks off Italian heritage month

TODAY KICKS OFF ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH, AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE, THAN EATING AUTHENTIC ITALIAN FOOD.

22NEWS REPORTER TASHANEA WHITLOW WILL SHOW YOU THE DELICIOUS SPREAD THAT WAS OFFERED AT THIS YEAR'S TASTE OF ITALY.

THE ANNUAL EVENT WAS HELD IN SPRINGFIELD'S SOUTH END, AN AREA THAT HAS ITALIAN ROOTS.

PIZZA, PIZZA, COME ON, THE PIZZA.

PEOPLE LINED UP FOR THIS YEAR'S TASTE OF ITALY.

THE RECEIPES ARE PASSED DOWN.

PEOPLE ARE MAKING THEIR PARENTS RECEIPES.

THEY'RE FOLLOWING ON WITH TRADITION.

AND BOY WAS IT AN ITALIAN FEST FOR THE MASSES.

MORE THAN 800 PEOPLE WERE EXPECTED.

ANYTHING YOU COULD WANT IS HERE.

MEATBALLS, PASTA, DESSERTS AND WINE.

THE ANNUAL EVENT WAS HELD AT THE SOUTH END MIDDLE SCHOOL.

A SCHOOL THAT WAS BUILT BY SKILLFUL ITALIAN MASONERS.

WE STARTED WITH IN 1992, WITH THE CENTENNIAL HONORING COLUMBUS DISCOVERY OF AMERICA.

AND WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AS PARISH, EVERYBODY SAID, "OH FOOD, OUR PEOPLE KNOW FOOD.

" SO IT;'S BEEN FOOD AND THAT'S WHAT WE DO.

THE AMBIANCE AND FOOD WAS STRICTLY ITALIAN.

WE MAKE BROWNIES AND COOKIES, A LOT OF DESSERT, BUT TORTELLINIS ARE MY MAIN MEAL.

BOOKS ON ITALIAN HERITAGE WERE FOR SALE.

ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE EVENT WILL GO TOWARDS OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL CHURCH, BUILDING A NEW $2-MILLION PARISH.

THE GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY WILL TAKE PLACE IN NOVEMBER.
